Good leadership inspires others to ‘pay it forward’ and be the best they can be.

Witnessing individuals in positions of authority doing good is incredibly inspiring and should motivate others to "pay it forward." They say that the best leadership is leading by example, and I firmly believe that. If you want to be a role model, you need to back up your words with actions, especially in today's age of constant scrutiny, where people can easily criticise others behind the safety of their screens.

Many of the most effective leaders I've encountered didn't actively pursue leadership; it was as if they were called to it. When the time came, they stepped up and grew into the role, earning the respect and trust of those around them. They attracted followers based on their leadership qualities and the values that made people gravitate toward them.

Then, there are those who believed their own hype. Some have done well enough for themselves, while others have faded into obscurity, never to be heard from again.

But it's the resilient, determined leaders, those who are clear about their direction and know how to bring people along with them—who truly inspire me.

Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher becoming leader of the Conservative Party. It's quite a milestone. Though the political landscape has changed dramatically since then, the qualities of a great leader remain largely the same. For me, Margaret Thatcher epitomised everything I believe: that success is not reserved for the affluent, that you're not bound by your circumstances, that you don’t need to fit in, and that hard work and resilience will carry you far. Even if you stumble along the way (and you probably will), your perseverance and determination will earn you respect. People will be drawn to you for your strength and resilience. These qualities make you a problem solver, and the experiences and struggles you've faced give you empathy and emotional intelligence—traits that are far too underrated in this world.

If you can understand what others are going through, and offer a helping hand when times get tough, it shows you care. And if you care, you can lead. And if you can lead, you can achieve great things, supported by many.

So, what’s stopping you?

Another great leader comes to mind, who inspired many women, girls and men alike to become scientists, astrologers, politicians and leaders. Only this one was fictional, brought to life by the wonderful Kate Mulgrew. And who many of us look up to. Dream big, lead by example. One of my favourite and most moving quotes from the good captain is this:

“There are three things you need to know about being a Starfleet Captain.

  1. Keep your shirt tucked in.

  2. Go down with the ship.

  3. Never give up on or abandon a member of your crew.”
