Discovering Bortodoor: A Hidden Wine Gem in Budapest's District 6

Recently, we had the opportunity to travel to Budapest and visit a true hidden gem of a wine bar: Bortodoor, tucked away off the beaten track and beloved by locals in the heart of Budapest’s District 6.

Specialising in an exceptional selection of wines, both international and, to our delight, particularly Hungarian, we were completely immersed in the world of Bortodoor through an impressive ‘blind tasting’ wine flight, guided by the business co-owner, Suze. Not only did she take the time to learn about each of our group's wine preferences, but she also handpicked a wine flight for us to blind-taste and provide feedback on, accompanied by a menu with detailed descriptions of the wines – a menu that could only have been crafted by someone with a genuine passion for wine. It truly felt special.

Upon entering Bortodoor, the first impression is "WOW" – this is a fantastic wine bar. Beautiful displays of wine greet you, a large bar where patrons enjoy the New York-style ‘sit at the bar’ experience, as well as tables with candlelight for groups like ours. To the right of the bar is a stunning and elegant area with plush seating and impressive wine collections from floor to ceiling – it definitely has the WOW factor.

Not only did we enjoy some beautifully produced Hungarian wines, but we also indulged in the artsy and plentiful cheese and charcuterie platters, showcasing local cheeses and Hungarian delicacies. A highlight was definitely the flatbreads with babaganoush and hummus. It was the perfect accompaniment to our blind-tasting wine flights.

The evening had a very social atmosphere, with a cool, down-to-earth vibe. Locals and regulars mingled with newcomers. Our friend Chris had been here before, and it was on his recommendation that we were all eager to visit Bortodoor. It certainly did not disappoint.

Situated in the heart of District 6, the area has a cool, artisan vibe with great food, wine, and friendly people. We cannot recommend Bortodoor enough, and we’re already excited to return to try their Wine Mafia evening – just another great reason to revisit Budapest and experience Bortodoor again.
